Choosing between a rechargeable, 240V or 12V roller blind motor is mainly a question of installation, power access and how the blind will be used. Voltage alone does not tell you how much a motor can lift. Tube compatibility and torque still need to be checked separately.

Rechargeable motors are usually the easiest choice for existing blinds, DIY projects and windows without nearby wiring.
240V hardwired motors suit planned electrical installations, new builds, renovations and blinds that need permanent mains power.
12V motors suit purpose-designed low-voltage systems, central power supplies and specialist automation projects.
There is no single best power type for every blind. The right choice is the one that fits the tube, has enough torque, can be powered safely and works with the controls you want.
Rechargeable roller blind motors
A rechargeable motor stores power in an internal lithium-ion battery. The motor, receiver and battery sit inside the blind tube, so there is no permanent cable running to the window.

Retrofitting an existing roller blind.
DIY-friendly installations where no mains wiring is required.
Rental properties or finished rooms where chasing cables is impractical.
Windows where the blind only needs charging periodically.
Advantages
No licensed electrician is normally required for the motor installation.
Clean wire-free appearance at the window.
The blind can still operate during a household power outage while the battery has charge.
Compatible models can be charged from a cable or a suitable solar accessory.
Things to plan for
The charging port needs to remain accessible.
Charging frequency changes with blind size, daily use, temperature and battery condition.
The motor still needs the correct crown, drive, bracket and torque for the blind.

240V hardwired roller blind motors
A 240V motor connects to mains power and does not need routine charging. It is a strong option when wiring can be planned before walls and finishes are complete, or when a permanent powered solution is preferred.
Best suited to
New builds and renovations with an electrician already involved.
High-use blinds where eliminating charging is a priority.
Larger or commercial installations where an appropriate hardwired motor is specified.
Projects with planned wall controls or building automation.
Important considerations
A licensed electrician is required for the 240V electrical work.
Cable routes, isolation and control wiring should be planned before installation.
A 240V label does not automatically mean the motor has more torque than every rechargeable motor. Compare the Nm rating.
The blind will not operate during a power outage unless the wider system has backup power.

12V low-voltage roller blind motors
A 12V motor runs from a permanent low-voltage supply rather than an internal rechargeable battery or direct 240V feed at the motor. It is commonly chosen for purpose-designed control systems, central power supplies and specialist installations.
Best suited to
Home automation systems designed around low-voltage outputs, including suitable C-Bus projects.
Caravans, off-grid systems and other installations with an appropriate 12V supply.
Commercial or multi-blind projects where centralised low-voltage power has been designed in.
Important considerations
The power supply must be correctly sized for the motor load and number of blinds.
Cable distance and voltage drop need to be considered.
Low voltage does not mean every part of the installation is automatically DIY. The mains side of the power supply may still require an electrician.
Control compatibility must be confirmed for the exact motor and automation system.

Does power type determine motor strength?
No. Torque is measured in Newton metres, shown as Nm. A rechargeable motor can have more torque than a small 240V motor, and a 240V motor can have more torque than a small rechargeable motor. Compare the actual torque rating and the blind load, not the voltage label.

Confirm the blind width, drop, fabric load and required torque.
Choose rechargeable, 240V or 12V based on the installation and available power.
Choose Automate or Somfy and confirm the exact remote, hub or automation protocol.
Check brackets, charging access, wiring and installation requirements before ordering.
Can different power types be used in the same home?
Yes, but control compatibility is a separate question. Motors can share a room and still use different power types, provided each motor is compatible with the remotes, hubs and automation system selected for it. Do not assume different brands or radio protocols will share one remote.
Which one should most homeowners choose?
For an existing residential blind, rechargeable is often the simplest starting point. For a new build with wiring already planned, 240V can remove the need for charging. For a purpose-designed low-voltage system, 12V may be the cleanest integration. The final decision still depends on the tube, torque and controls.
