Motorised Blind Wall Switch Not Working? Troubleshooting Guide
Updated: Sep 15
When a motorised-blind wall switch stops working, the fault may be the controller, the selected channel, radio pairing, motor power or an incompatible replacement. Work through the simple checks before resetting the motor.
1. Check Whether the Motor Works From Another Control
Try a handheld remote, another wall switch or the compatible hub app. If another control operates the blind, the motor has power and the problem is probably limited to the wall switch, its battery, channel or pairing.
If no control works, check whether the motor has power or charge before changing programming. For rechargeable blinds, connect the correct charger and allow sufficient charging time. For mains-powered motors, check the circuit safely and use an electrician where required.
2. Replace the Wall-Switch Battery
A weak battery can produce intermittent operation, reduced range or no response. Replace it with the exact specified battery type and observe the correct polarity.
Somfy Smoove RTS II uses a CR2032 battery. The Automate Surface Mount Wall Switch uses a CR2430. Check the individual product guide for Paradigm models rather than assuming all wall controls use the same cell.
3. Make Sure the Controller Is Active
A new Smoove RTS II may be in a transport or deactivated state. Follow its activation instruction and check for a control indication. A locked Automate controller may restrict programming functions even if normal operation remains available.
4. Check the Selected Channel
On a multi-channel wall switch, select the channel originally paired with the blind. It is common to mistake an unused channel for a failed controller, particularly after batteries have been changed or channels hidden.
Test each visible channel once and note which blinds respond. Avoid changing assignments until the existing layout is understood.
5. Confirm Compatibility
Automate ARC and Somfy RTS are different control systems. A replacement from the wrong brand will not pair. Within Somfy, Smoove RTS II will not directly control a Zigbee-only or direct-wired motor.
For older Automate installations, confirm whether the Paradigm controller needs ARC or legacy mode. Similar-looking controllers may be configured for different motor generations.
6. Test From Close to the Motor
Remove a magnetically mounted controller if applicable and test it closer to the motor. If it works nearby but not at the wall, the problem is likely radio range or interference rather than pairing.
Dense masonry, metal wall boxes, switchboards, appliances and foil-backed insulation can reduce radio performance. Move the control or consider the manufacturer’s suitable repeater or system solution if the normal position is outside reliable range.
7. Check Whether the Switch Is Still Paired
If the battery and channel are correct but another control works, the wall switch may no longer be stored in the motor. Add it again using a working individual controller or the motor’s prescribed programming button.
For Somfy RTS, the usual add-control process is a held PROG command on the working source control until the motor jogs, followed by a brief PROG press on the new Smoove. For Automate ARC, use the applicable P1 or P2 add-controller method for the motor and wall-switch model.
8. Check for a Group-Programming Error
If the wrong blinds move, the switch may have been paired from a group channel. Reconstruct which motors are stored on each channel before removing anything. Add or remove motors one at a time using their individual controls.
9. Do Not Factory Reset Too Early
A reset may erase limits, directions, favourite positions or other paired controls. It can also affect multiple motors if a power-cycle procedure is performed while they share a circuit.
Only reset after identifying the exact motor model and confirming that the correct recovery procedure is necessary.
When the Buttons Work but the Blind Moves Incorrectly
If up and down are reversed, use the direction-change procedure for the exact motor. If the blind stops early or travels too far, the issue is likely motor limits rather than the wall control. Do not change limits from a channel controlling several motors.
Information to Collect Before Asking for Help
Take clear photos of the motor label, front and back of the wall control, existing remote and battery compartment. Note which buttons or channels respond, whether the motor jogs during programming, and whether another controller still works.
Those details usually identify whether the issue is power, battery, range, compatibility or programming—and help avoid an unnecessary reset.
