How to Pair an Automate ARC Wall Switch to Your Blinds

Automate Paradigm and Surface Mount wall controls can be added to compatible Automate ARC motors without deleting the blind’s existing upper and lower limits. The two common methods use either the motor’s P1 button or a working ARC controller already paired to the motor.
Button locations and response patterns can vary slightly by motor and controller model. Confirm the product guide before starting, particularly on older or legacy installations.
Before You Start
Confirm that the motor uses Automate ARC and that the new wall controller is in the correct mode. Some Paradigm controllers can be changed between ARC and older EL or legacy operation, so a control in the wrong mode may appear completely unresponsive.
Make sure the motor limits are already set and the blind travels correctly. Select the channel you want to add on the new wall controller. When using an existing multi-channel controller as the source, select an individual motor channel rather than an ALL or group channel.
Method 1: Pair Using the Motor P1 Button
This is the clearest method when the motor head is accessible and you want to add one specific motor to the selected wall-switch channel.
Step 1: Select the destination channel
On the new wall controller, select the channel that will operate the motor. On a one-channel controller there is nothing to select.
Step 2: Activate the motor’s P1 function
Press and hold the P1 button on the motor head until the motor gives the prescribed jog and beep response. Release at the first add-controller response; holding P1 for longer can enter other programming functions.
Step 3: Confirm from the new wall control
Press and hold STOP on the new wall controller until the motor jogs and beeps to confirm pairing. This method adds the controller while retaining the motor’s established limits.
Step 4: Test the motor
Use up, down and stop. Confirm that the selected channel controls only the intended motor or planned group.
Method 2: Pair Using an Existing ARC Controller
Use this method when the motor P1 button is difficult to reach but you have a working individual controller or channel for the target motor.
Step 1: Prepare both controls
On the existing controller, select the individual motor channel. On the new wall switch, select the destination channel.
Step 2: Send the programming sequence
Press P2 on the existing controller, wait for the motor response, then press P2 on the existing controller again. Complete the sequence using the add-control action specified for the new controller—commonly P2 on the new wall switch, with some controller instructions using a held STOP command.
Because the final button can differ between Automate controller families, use the programming sheet supplied with the exact wall switch. The key sequence is: existing controller P2, existing controller P2, then the destination-controller confirmation.
Step 3: Confirm the result
The motor should jog and beep to confirm the new channel. Test the new wall switch immediately.
How to Create a Group Channel
Several compatible ARC motors can be paired to the same wall-switch channel so they move together. Add each motor to that shared channel one at a time.
Keep every motor assigned to an individual channel elsewhere. Automate advises that limits and favourite positions should not be adjusted while several motors are selected as a group.
Pairing Paradigm Wall Controllers
Paradigm controllers are available in one, two and fifteen channels. Choose and record the destination channel before programming. On the fifteen-channel model, hide unused channels only after pairing and testing so the commissioning process remains easy to follow.
Pairing the Surface Mount Wall Switch
The Surface Mount Wall Switch offers five channels. Pair the removable or fixed controller module from the intended wall position after first confirming that the radio signal is reliable there.
If several nearby blinds are being commissioned, label the channels temporarily. This prevents one motor from accidentally being added to multiple unintended channels.
If Pairing Does Not Work
Check the motor technology
The wall switch must match an Automate ARC motor or compatible ARC receiver. A legacy motor may need a different controller mode or added receiver.
Check the controller mode
If a Paradigm controller was previously used with an older motor, it may be in legacy mode. Confirm the mode before repeating the pairing sequence.
Check P2 access and timing
P2 is normally beneath or behind the battery cover. Use deliberate presses and wait for the motor response at each stage.
Check the selected channels
Make sure the source is the individual motor channel and the destination is the new channel you intend to keep.
Avoid an Unnecessary Reset
A full motor reset is not the normal way to add a wall switch. It may erase limits or other controls. If P1 is inaccessible and no working controller remains, identify the exact motor model before attempting a recovery procedure.
Once pairing is complete, test every individual and group channel, confirm direction and stop operation, and then install or secure the wall controller.
