How to Control Roller Blind Motors: Remote, App, Voice & Timers
A roller blind motor can be controlled by a handheld remote, wall control, timer, app, voice assistant or a wider home automation system. The important rule is that controls must match the motor's radio protocol and brand ecosystem. Power type alone does not determine control compatibility.

1. Handheld remote controls
A handheld remote is the simplest control method. It talks directly to a compatible radio motor, so no hub or internet connection is normally needed.
Single-channel remotes suit one blind or one group.
Multi-channel remotes let you separate rooms or groups.
An all-channel command can move several programmed blinds together.
The remote must use the protocol supported by the motor.
A remote is often all that is required for a bedroom, rental or straightforward retrofit. It is also a useful local backup when app control is added later.
2. Wall controls
Wireless wall controls provide a fixed place to operate the blind without running control wiring. Hardwired wall switches may be used with certain 240V or building-automation installations. The correct option depends on the exact motor and receiver.
3. Timers and schedules
Timers can open blinds in the morning, close them for privacy at night or reduce afternoon heat and UV exposure. Depending on the system, schedules may be stored in a compatible timer remote or created through a hub and app.
Check where the schedule is stored and what happens if the internet is unavailable. A local timer remote and a cloud-connected app are not the same type of system.
4. App control
App control normally requires a compatible hub. The hub translates between the motor's radio network and the home's Wi-Fi or internet connection. A radio motor does not become app-controlled simply because it is rechargeable or labelled smart.
Automate

5. Voice control
Voice control is normally provided through the compatible hub and its supported smart-home integration. The voice platform does not usually communicate with the blind motor directly.
Before ordering, confirm the exact motor, hub and voice platform combination. Brand names alone are not enough because a manufacturer can offer more than one radio protocol.
RF, RTS, ARC and Zigbee
These names describe different control technologies or ecosystems. Automate ARC, Somfy RTS and Zigbee motors are not automatically interchangeable. A remote or hub must explicitly support the motor protocol.

Can Automate and Somfy share one remote?
Generally, no. Their native radio controls are different. A home can contain both brands, but each system needs compatible controls. A wider automation platform may present both systems in one interface if both are correctly integrated, but that does not make the motors share the same native remote or hub.
Do you need a hub?
Not for basic remote or compatible wall-control operation. A hub becomes relevant when you want app access, voice control, scenes, remote access or more advanced automation. The best approach is to choose the simplest control system that delivers the functions you will actually use.
Choose controls in this order
Confirm the motor fits the roller tube and has enough torque.
Choose the power type: rechargeable, 240V or 12V.
Choose the motor brand and radio protocol.
Choose local controls such as a remote or wall control.
Add a compatible hub only if you need app, voice or automation features.
A practical setup for most homes
Many homes work well with a multi-channel remote for everyday operation and a compatible hub for schedules and app control. That combination gives visitors and family members a simple physical control while keeping automation available in the background.
