How to Install a Tubular Motor Into a Roller Blind Tube

Retrofitting a motor into an existing roller blind is usually a mechanical conversion, not a full blind replacement. You keep the fabric and, when the tube is compatible, keep the tube as well. The chain mechanism is removed and a tubular motor becomes the new drive. The job becomes straightforward once the tube has been identified correctly.

Before you start: identify the tube

Do this before buying the motor. Remove the blind, expose the open tube end and record the outside diameter and internal profile. Use our Identify Your Tube guide to match S45, S40, S60, 38mm, HD50, S35 or L45 and then view motors confirmed for that profile.

Step 1: Check the blind and tube are suitable

Check the tube for sag, damage and very thin walls. Record blind width, fabric drop and fabric type. A motor needs enough torque to lift the blind, but the tube also needs enough rigidity to remain stable under load.

Step 2: Choose a motor confirmed for the tube

Once the tube is known, use its compatibility page rather than picking a motor from diameter alone. Select a motor with suitable torque and the correct control/power type for your project. Rechargeable motors are popular for DIY retrofits because they do not require mains wiring at the blind.

Step 3: Get the correct crown and drive

The crown supports and tracks the motor inside the roller, while the drive locks into the tube and turns it. These parts must match both the motor and the internal tube profile. A motor that physically slides into a tube is not necessarily compatible.

Step 4: Remove the chain mechanism

Take the blind down safely and remove the existing chain control from the control end. Keep note of the roll direction and bracket orientation. On the opposite end, inspect the idler and decide whether it can remain or whether the retrofit kit uses a different idler/bracket arrangement.

Step 5: Fit the crown and drive to the motor

Install the specified adaptors exactly as required for the motor. The drive needs to engage firmly with the tube profile and the crown must sit correctly so the motor remains aligned inside the roller.

Step 6: Insert the motor into the roller tube

Slide the motor into the tube carefully until the crown and drive are seated. Do not hammer a motor or adaptor into a tube that feels wrong. Unexpected resistance is a reason to stop and re-check compatibility, not to add force.

Step 7: Reinstall the blind and motor bracket

Fit the motor head into its compatible bracket, refit the idler end and confirm the roller turns freely with adequate clearance. Some existing brackets can remain; other motor heads require a dedicated bracket or adaptor.

Step 8: Pair the control, check direction and set limits

Follow the programming instructions for the specific motor and remote. Confirm direction before setting the upper and lower limits. Test several full cycles and make sure the fabric tracks correctly before considering the retrofit complete.

What changes if you choose a 240V motor?

The mechanical retrofit principles are similar, but fixed mains wiring must be completed in accordance with Australian electrical requirements by a licensed electrician. If you want a DIY-friendly retrofit, a confirmed rechargeable option is normally the simpler route.

What if your tube is not motor-ready?

You may still be able to keep the fabric. A motor-ready tube, matching brackets and idler can replace the unsuitable mechanical parts, turning a manual blind with a poor tube into a proper retrofit platform.
